Is BarTender 2022/BarTender 12 compatible with my old Zebra printers?

Generally, yes.

BarTender supports over 11,000 printer drivers. However, to leverage the latest features like "Intelligent Templates" and remote cloud printing, we recommend ensuring your printer firmware is up to date. Labelman can assist with a compatibility audit for your entire printer fleet.

Whether you are upgrading to the newly released BarTender (v12) or sticking with an older version, the short answer is yes, BarTender is almost universally compatible with legacy Zebra printers.

However, there are a few technical nuances you should check to ensure a plug-and-play experience:

1. Drivers are the Key

BarTender’s parent company, Seagull Scientific, writes its own high-performance drivers for Zebra printers.

  • Action: You should download the latest Drivers by Seagull for your specific Zebra model (e.g., an old S4M or Z4M).

  • Benefit: These drivers are specifically optimized for BarTender 2022 and often perform better than the standard Windows drivers.

2. Connection Method

  • USB/Ethernet: These will work seamlessly with BarTender 2022.

  • Parallel/Serial (RS-232): If your old printer uses these older ports, ensure your modern PC has the correct hardware or a high-quality adapter to talk to the software.

3. Smart Features vs. Legacy Hardware

While BarTender 12 introduces Intelligent Forms to automate template selection without coding, the speed at which the label prints is still limited by your hardware's internal memory and processor.

  • Note: Older printers may not support some of the advanced RFID encoding features found in the newer BarTender tiers.

4. Direct Protocol (ZPL)

Zebra printers use a language called ZPL (Zebra Programming Language). Since ZPL has remained remarkably consistent over the decades, BarTender 12 can still generate the code that your 15-year-old printer understands perfectly.
